In Excel, a chart also referred to as a graph is used to graphically display data which can make it easier for the user to analyse and interpret.
In this tutorial, we will show you how to compare revenue figures for two different years using a line graph.

Instructions
- Firstly you will need to setup your data to be able to compare month to month revenue.
- Once you have setup your data you need to highlight all your data and then click ‘Insert’. From the Insert menu, we will then need to select the appropriate ‘Line Graph’.
- Now that the graph has been automatically generated, we can move and resize it to suit our preference.
- Once you have formatted the graph, we can now give the chart a title, you can do this simply by clicking on ‘Chart Title’ and renaming it. If you do not have a default chart title you can add this by clicking on ‘Add Chart Element’ -> Chart Title -> Above Chart.
- Now we can add Axis Titles by clicking on ‘Add Chart Element’ -> Axis Title -> Primary Horizontal or Primary Vertical. We can call the Horizontal axis Month and Vertical axis Revenue.
- Next, we need to edit the Legend title, the Legend is the name of the two lines that we will be comparing in this example these are the lines defining the year 2017 and 2018.
- To do this right click on the chart and then click select data and then rename the legend entries by clicking on the first legend entry and inputting 2017 into the ‘Name’ field and then doing the same for the 2nd
- Once this is done click ‘OK’ and you now have your completed chart.
