How to Calculate the Area of a Circle? | Geometry | Maths | Tutorial

The area of a circle can be derived by the formula A = πr2. In this tutorial you will learn how to apply this formula to an example. For explanation on how this formula works read article “Area of a Circle – Proof

 Formula

A = πr2

Where:

A = Area

π(pi) = 3.14159…

r = Radius (Half of the diameter)

Example

In this example let’s assume that the diameter of the circle is 10cm. What is the area of the circle?

Solution

Step 1: Work out the radius of the circle

Diameter = 2r

10 = 2r

Radius = 5cm

Step 2: Area of Circle

A = πr2

A = π x 52

A = 3.14159… x 25

A = 78.53982cm2 (5 decimal places)
